PIERCING AFTERCARE INSTRUCTIONS

1. Keep it Clean:

  • Saline Solution: The best way to clean most piercings is with a sterile saline wound wash solution. You can purchase this at a pharmacy.

  • Salt Water Soak: Alternatively, you can make your own salt solution by dissolving 1/4 teaspoon of non-iodized sea salt in one cup of warm distilled or bottled water.

  • Cleaning Process: Gently clean around the piercing with the saline solution using a clean, disposable paper towel or cotton swab. Do this 2-3 times a day.

  • Avoid Harsh Chemicals: Do not use alcohol, hydrogen peroxide, or any harsh cleaning agents, as these can delay the healing process.

2. Hands Off:

  • Avoid Touching: Do not touch your piercing unless you are cleaning it, and always wash your hands before you do.

  • No Twisting: Do not twist or turn the jewelry during the healing process.

3. Keep it Dry:

  • Pat Dry: After cleaning, gently pat the area dry with a clean, disposable paper towel. Do not use cloth towels, as they can harbor bacteria.

  • Avoid Swimming: Stay out of pools, hot tubs, lakes, and other bodies of water during the initial healing period.

4. Be Mindful of Clothing and Hair:

  • Avoid Snags: Be careful with clothing, hair, and other items that might snag on the jewelry.

  • Loose Clothing: Wear loose clothing around the piercing site, if possible.

5. Watch for Signs of Infection:

  • Normal Symptoms: Some redness, swelling, and discomfort are normal in the first few days.

  • Infection Signs: If you notice increased redness, swelling, heat, pain, or any discharge that is yellow or green, seek medical attention, as these could be signs of an infection.

6. Leave the Jewelry In:

  • Healing Period: Keep the jewelry in place for the entire recommended healing period. Removing it early can cause the piercing to close or increase the risk of infection.

  • Downsizing: If your piercer recommends downsizing the jewelry after initial swelling has gone down, make sure to go back to them or another professional to have it changed.

7. Avoid Certain Products:

  • No Makeup or Lotions: Avoid applying makeup, lotions, or other products to the piercing.

  • No Oral Contact: If it’s an oral piercing, avoid spicy foods, and rinse your mouth with saline solution after eating or drinking anything other than water.

8. Follow Specific Piercing Instructions:

  • Different types of piercings may require specific care, so make sure to follow any additional instructions provided by your piercer.

9. When to Seek Medical Attention:

  • If you suspect an infection or if you have any concerns about your piercing, don’t hesitate to seek medical advice.

10. Be Patient:

  • Healing times vary depending on the type of piercing, ranging from a few weeks to several months. Be patient and continue to follow proper aftercare throughout the entire healing period.
