TATTOO AFTERCARE INSTRUCTIONS
1. Leave the Bandage Alone:
Initial Bandage: Keep the initial bandage on for at least 2-3 hours, or as recommended by your tattoo artist.
Saniderm/Tegaderm: If a breathable, waterproof bandage is used, it can be left on for 3-4 days.
2. Wash Your Hands:
Always ensure your hands are clean before touching your tattoo.
3. Gently Clean the Tattoo:
Remove the Bandage: Carefully remove the bandage. If it sticks, moisten it with warm water.
Lukewarm Water and Mild Soap: Use lukewarm water and a mild, fragrance-free soap to clean the tattoo. Avoid abrasive materials.
Pat Dry: Use a clean, disposable paper towel to gently pat the tattoo dry.
4. Apply a Thin Layer of Ointment:
Recommended Products: Use a thin layer of a non-petroleum based, fragrance-free ointment or lotion. Products like Aquaphor (non-petroleum based) are commonly recommended.
Light Application: Ensure not to over-apply; the tattoo needs to breathe.
5. Keep it Moisturized:
Maintain moisture in the tattoo, but avoid saturating it.
6. Avoid Sun Exposure:
Keep the tattoo away from direct sunlight and apply sunscreen once fully healed.
7. Do Not Pick or Scratch:
Healing Process: Avoid picking at scabs or scratching the area. Gently pat if itching occurs.
Peeling is Normal: Allow any peeling skin to come off naturally.
8. Avoid Submerging in Water:
Refrain from swimming or soaking the tattoo. Showers are fine but avoid direct water stream on the tattoo.
9. Wear Loose Clothing:
Opt for loose, breathable clothing over the tattoo.
10. Be Patient:
Healing times vary; typically, they range from 2-4 weeks. Follow any specific aftercare instructions from your tattoo artist.
When to Seek Medical Attention:
Seek medical attention for signs of infection or if you experience an adverse reaction.
